Delivery Tip Methodology
Our delivery, grocery, furniture, and rideshare calculators do not just multiply a percentage. They use transparent factor-based models, documented here so you can see exactly where every dollar of a recommendation comes from.

What these models are โ and are not
The models are editorial estimates built from common US tipping practice. They are not official formulas from DoorDash, Uber, Lyft, Instacart, or any other company, and CalculateTip.io is not affiliated with those platforms. Tipping is always optional and discretionary โ treat every recommendation as a starting point and adjust for your situation. Each calculator includes a manual override for exactly that reason.
Food delivery model
Used on the DoorDash and food delivery calculators. Drivers typically see the promised tip before accepting an order, and they pay for their own vehicle and fuel, so the model prices the trip as well as the food value:
- Base: 15% of the food subtotal, with a $3 minimum
- Distance: $0.60 per one-way mile beyond the first 2 miles
- Order size: medium +$1, large or heavy +$2.50
- Bad weather: +$2
- Service adjustment: poor ร0.85, good as calculated, excellent ร1.20
The result is rounded to the nearest quarter dollar, floored at $2, and shown with a fair range (15% below to 25% above the recommendation) plus the percentage equivalent of your subtotal. Example: a $32 order 5 miles away in the rain โ $4.80 base + $1.80 distance + $1.00 size + $2.00 weather โ $9.50 recommended.
Grocery delivery model
Used on the Instacart and grocery delivery calculators. Grocery delivery is two jobs: the in-store shopping and the drive to your door. The model prices each part separately so a big stock-up and a long drive are both visible:
- Shopping effort: 5% of the subtotal ($3 minimum), scaled by item count โ a few items ร0.8, a week's run ร1, a big stock-up ร1.3
- Drop-off: $1.50 base + $0.50 per mile
- Heavy items: +$2 ยท stairs or difficult drop-off: +$2
- Minimum: the final recommendation is at least $5
Example: a $120 stock-up with heavy items 6 miles away โ $7.80 shopping + $6.50 drop-off โ $14.25 recommended.
Furniture & appliance delivery model
Used on the furniture and appliance delivery calculators. This work is priced per worker because crews usually split tips person by person:
- Base: $10 per delivery worker
- Stairs: +$5 per flight (capped at 3 flights)
- Assembly or setup: +$10 per worker
- Items: 3โ5 items +$5, 6+ items +$10 per worker
- Oversized or very heavy pieces: +$5 per worker
Example: 2 workers, 1 flight of stairs, 3 items โ $20 per worker, $40 total (fair range $32โ$50).
Rideshare model
Used on the Uber and Lyft calculators. The recommendation scales with the fare and adds flat amounts for effort a percentage would miss:
- Base: 10% of the fare for poor, 15% for good, 20% for excellent service
- Extra effort: +$1.50 each for luggage help, heavy traffic or a long wait, and late-night or airport trips
- Minimum: $2 suggested for short rides
Example: a $24 fare with good service and luggage help โ $3.60 base + $1.50 extra โ $5.00 recommended.
Sources and limits
The percentage anchors (15โ20% for food delivery and rideshare, per-person flat rates for furniture crews) reflect widely published US tipping guidance and common practice. Platform policies, local customs, and driver arrangements vary, and no public source defines an "official" delivery tip. Where practice is unsettled, the models choose round, explainable numbers rather than false precision.
